What originally started off as a night at the Ballet was enhanced with an early evening visit to the London Eye on London's South Bank. Great effort was taken to plan the visit to ensure it took place on the only wet evening in August 2001!

Photographs taken with the Minolta Dimage 7, all settings on automatic apart from using manual focus for a few. Any small enhancements necessary were done in Adobe Photoshop 6.

Not quite the balmy August evening hoped for! The Eye, seen from the shelter of the Shell Building with Jubilee Gardens directly in front. There are 32 cabins on the Eye. (44Kb) We're off! The effect on the photo is not some arty Photoshop filter but is caused by rain on the cabin! County Hall off the left, Houses of Parliament across the river on the right. (69Kb) At the quarter way point. The centre spindle of the Eye can be clearly seen with the cantilever support on the left and the securing cables. The white "bars" on the right are the electrical mains busbars to feed mains power in the cabins. (51Kb)

"The quarter point again, looking as straight down as I could get, with Jubilee gardens on the left, and the river on the right. The two blue "pipes" are a floating barrier to stop craft going between the eye and the boat pontoon to the extreme right. (64Kb) At the top! Other people in the cabin were calling friends on their mobiles saying "we're at the top!" This is looking towards the City of London, with St. Pauls Cathedral just discernable in the murk, with the Natwest Tower off to the right. The building with the green roof is the Royal Festival Hall, now 50 years old. (50Kb) Just past the top now, on the way down again. (42Kb)

Exif data
No, not the Leaning Tower of Pisa, but the Shell Centre caused by some interesting camera lens distortion. Waterloo station in the background, with the Eurostar terminal directly in front of it. Jubilee Gardens to the left and County Hall on the right. (99Kb)
"The Mother of all Parliaments" or so they say. The Houses of Commons and Lords with "Big Ben". To its right is Portcullis House which provides offices (the most expensive per square foot in London) for approx 625 MPs. Westminster Abbey can be seen behind the House of Parliament, with New Scotland Yard to its right. (63Kb) Now at full optical zoom (x7). Photo taken at about.. ummmm.. 6.20pm! (64Kb)

County Hall again, once home to the hated Greater London Council. Now, it houses a Japanese hotel and a Travelodge (I believe) (70Kb) Despite the queues, there seem to be no effort to get more people into each cabinet; with 22 people inside, there is still plenty of room. (61Kb)
