A series of photographs taken during a week's holiday in the Peak District late December 2001/early January 2002. After the hysteria and blatant commercialism of Christmas, I always try to get away for a wekk's peace and quiet. I'd rented a cottage in Great Longstone, about five miles north-west of Bakewell. This year's trip coincided with a particualrly cold snap and beautiful snowy conditions.
I have included the EXIF data for all the shots. Simply hover the mouse over the "EXIF data" links and a smaller window will pop up. To close the window, move the mouse away from the link.
Cropping, size reduction and/or very minor adjustments were done with Adobe Photoshop 6. Photos compressed generally at around 45% to optimise download time. All photos taken with Minolta Dimage 7.

| Outside my cottage, Great Longstone. My car, although not needed for a few days, was in a garage, luckily! Exif data (57Kb) |
Ah - so different from where I live! Great Lonsgtone looks especially attractive after an overnight fall of snow. A view of the village green. Exif data (59Kb) |
Walking towards Little Longstone. Although it is difficult to see, I'm crossing a field with quite a slope on it and this was soon used by the locals for tobogganing. Exif data (57Kb) |

| Part of my route was along the Monsal Trail, which uses the trackbed of the old main railway line from St Pancras to Manchester. This opened in 1863 and closed in 1968. A better view of the area can be seen in the next gallery. The small red fruits on the bush here are just one tiny bit of colour in an almost black-and-white world. Exif data (111Kb) |
Monsal Dale, one of many spectacular dales in this part of the Peaks, formed by the last great Ice Age. Exif data (95Kb) |
As well as the beauiful dales, there are some lovely airy vistas as well. This, taken during a the break for morning coffee, is near Sheldon. Exif data (72Kb) |

| Hmm.. not too many peaple have passed this way today! Another view approaching Sheldon. Exif data (52Kb) |
Bliss! So characteristic of the part of the country - stone walls emclosing the fields. Not all good news, though, as each wall wall either had to be climbed via a stile, or else had an impossibly narrow "squeeze" stile to get through! Exif data (40Kb) |
Isn't it beautiful? Just on the outskirts of Sheldon. Exif data (82Kb) |
