Another in a series of photographs taken during a holiday to the western USA during September 2001, using the Minolta Dimage 7 camera.

Cropping, size reduction and/or very minor adjustments were done with Adobe Photoshop 6. Photos compressed generally at around 45% to optimise download time.

In the distance is the island with the old prison of Alcatraz where many notorious criminals did "bird". (33Kb) On a warm summer's day, the fountain provides welcome relief. (71Kb) Taken just 6 days after the terrible events of September 11, America still mourns.(49Kb)

San Francisco

Coyt Tower San Francisco San Francisco
Coyt Tower - a memorial to the fireman who lost their lives in the fire following the great earthquake in 1921. (33Kb) A view across the city, with the top of high-rises lost in the mist that very often rolls in from the Pacific. (71Kb) The distinctive shape of the Trans-Am Building. (49Kb)
Cable car Cable car San Francisco
San Francisco. The city used to have a very extensive network of cable cars. Only three lines now remain, with the Market & Fisherman Wharf's line being the longest. Riding on the footboards is the only way to travel on them in my view! The LH photo shows the turntable at Market Street and in the RH photo, crowds waiting to board. (33Kb) San Francisco. The city also has an extensive network of trolley bus routes and a streetcar system which features restored streetcars from other US cities and also from various foreign cities.(49Kb)
